The targets of the “Advancing Mycological Research in Sri Lanka” initiative, powered by the Tropical Microbiology Research Foundation, focus on systematically uncovering and documenting the rich fungal biodiversity across Sri Lanka’s diverse ecosystems. The research aims to discover novel fungal species and identify new geographical and host records to fill critical gaps in national and global fungal knowledge. By employing integrated approaches including morphology, molecular phylogenetics, and taxonomy, the initiative strives for precise fungal identification and understanding of their ecological and economic roles. Additionally, it seeks to promote sustainable ecosystem management through fungal biodiversity, foster strong national and international collaborations, and build capacity by training the next generation of mycologists. Conservation of fungal strains in culture collections and exploration of fungi for biotechnological and industrial applications are also key targets. Ultimately, this initiative aspires to position Sri Lanka as a global center for tropical fungal research.
