Ms. Kishani Prashanthini Thushanthan

Type: Research Assistant

Ms. Kishani Prashanthini Thushanthan is a Probationary Lecturer in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. She holds a B.Sc. (Hons). in Botany and is currently pursuing her M.Phil. in Mycology at the University of Colombo.

Her research focuses on the diversity, community structure, and biotechnological potential of endophytic fungi associated with mangrove plants in Eastern Sri Lanka. She has presented her work at prominent academic platforms, including the Annual Research Symposium of the University of Colombo, and continues to contribute valuable findings to the field of tropical mycology.

Beyond her research, Mrs. Thushanthan is actively involved in the taxonomic documentation of Sri Lanka’s fungal diversity, including the preservation of fungal strains in national culture collections. She collaborates with both local and international mycologists, promoting scientific exchange and strengthening collaborative research networks. Currently she is preparing two manuscripts derived from her investigations on mangrove endophytic fungal diversity and their growth promoting ecological significance.

She is also passionate about mentoring and capacity building, guiding young researchers and research assistants in fungal taxonomy, molecular identification, phylogenetic analysis, and bioactive compound screening. Her dedication to teaching, research, and collaboration reflects her commitment to advancing mycological sciences in Sri Lanka. Her long-term vision is to establish a comprehensive framework for studying mangrove-associated endophytic fungi in Sri Lanka, from taxonomy and ecology to molecular characterization and bioactive potential. She aspires to drive innovative research that transforms unexplored fungal resources into solutions for biotechnology, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
