Led by Madhara K. Wimalasena and collaborators, this project investigates the taxonomy, phylogeny, and enzymatic potential of freshwater fungi from Sri Lanka’s Anuradhapura and Ratnapura districts. It involved the isolation and identification of 130 fungal strains and resulted in the discovery of two novel fungal species, along with new host and geographic records. This research advances knowledge on fungal biodiversity and their enzymatic applications in biotechnology.
